Hi Matthew,
Is your audience in a particular age group?
These heuristics were compiled for older users:
Chisnell, Dana E.; Janice C. (Ginny) Redish; and Amy Lee. February
2005. Designing Web Sites for Older Adults: Expert Review of Usability
for Older Adults at 50 Web Sites. Washington, D.C.: AARP Services,
Inc. Available online at http://assets.aarp.org/www.aarp.org_/articles/research/oww/AARP-50Sites.pdf
(though I found it hard to pick out guidelines that wouldn't be
applicable for adult users of any age).
If your site's audience is or includes teenagers, have a look at this
Alertbox article:
http://www.useit.com/alertbox/teenagers.html
NNG also offers a report with a checklist of usability guidelines for
websites for teens.
