Thanks to all for their comments and suggestions on my question.  At  
this point, the best approach seems to be an Explorer tree (aka  
"twisty triangles") with checkboxes at the nodes and leafs to make it  
possible to select either type of thing.  I've found some JQuery code  
that seems to come pretty close to doing the right thing, and will be  
giving it a try.
