Sure, but why is that a problem? Running the tests is separate from building 
curl and the test suite uses the openssl binary to generate some certs, it's 
not terribly important for the tests which version as long as it works.

That looks like you have a broken openssl binary?

Why not? The prefix is for the *build*. The tests just needs the openssl tool.
