  I have a "Tiny Core" linux live CD that works without the intel
driver (AFAICT). No native resolution though.

  This  gave  me  an idea, and guess what, if I run with the same
kernel/intel-driver  that crashes but with a different resolution
(1024x768) there's no crash.

  Now,  if  VESA can't do the native resolution, I don't know how
to get closer to a proof of a bug in the i915 driver.
