thankyou guys, all been very helpful.

As additional question is there a way that I can abort any timeouts
currently running?

Failing that how can I check if the mouse is over a certain element in the
code, none.mouseover seems too simple and doesn't work!

Just to add a little additional information, at the time that
"this.className=this.className.replace(" over", "");" gets executed,
"this" refers to the window object, which is very rarely useful....
