You might be better off considering XPath or XSLT to
navigate/manipulate your XML, depending on what you're trying to do.

Navigating around XML using the DOM is a pretty lengthy process
compared to what you can achieve in a few lines with XPath or XSLT.

But then you have to be careful about what browsers you're catering for.
