Changing nodeName/tagName

Is it possible to change one nodeName to another with the DOM ?
e.g. Changing an <input type='text'> to a <textarea>.

I thought something like:
document.getElementById('Description').nodeName='textarea';
or document.getElementById('Description').tagName='textarea';
might work, but neither do. (I know I'm trying to set a readonly
property.)

Any solutions would be greatfully appreciated.
