tooltip for options in a selectbox

Hi,
 
Does anyone know how we could show tooltips for text in the options of a select box?
 
I have a drop down and some of the option names are huge (will spoil the display) so I am showing them trimmed to x chars.
 
But, I want that when the user hovers over it, he sees the complete text in the tooltip.
 
Firefox lets us use title attribute in the options for a tooltip, but it doesn't work in IE.
 
Any help would be appreciated.
