Apache2 + FastCGI + PHP5 + Windows XP/2k problem

Hello all,

my "metal":
P4 3 GHZ HT, 1GB RAM.
Apache 2.0.52
PHP 5.0.5
mod_fastcgi-2.4.2

Tried this in Windows XP Pro and 2000 Server and 2003 Server.

my http.conf:

Alias /php/ "./../php/"
FastCgiServer "./../php/php-cgi.exe" -processes 4
AddType application/x-httpd-fastphp .php
Action application/x-httpd-fastphp /php/php-cgi.exe

In windows the suggested Environment variable for PHP: PHP_FCGI_CHILDREN, DOES NOT WORK, so I am using FastCGI -processes parameter
to get PHP to handle multiple requests at the same time.

If I leave the processes as 4, it works fine, but the minute
I use -processes 8
I get:
[Tue Sep 20 16:09:00 2005] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] FastCGI: comm with server "C:/php/php-cgi.exe" aborted: idle timeout (30 sec)
[Tue Sep 20 16:09:00 2005] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] FastCGI: incomplete headers (0 bytes) received from server
"C:/php/php-cgi.exe"

for every request.

Sometimes if I restart the server with -processes 8 it works, but then I restart again and see:
[Tue Sep 20 16:09:00 2005] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] FastCGI: comm with server "C:/php/php-cgi.exe" aborted: idle timeout (30 sec)
[Tue Sep 20 16:09:00 2005] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] FastCGI: incomplete headers (0 bytes) received from server

for every request.

I use -processes 16 or 32, I get:

consistently for every request.

My php scripts DO NOT take more than 30 seconds.  I tried playing with the timeout parameters, it did not help.
I want to use static server configuration for FastCGI.  I tried dynamic, It had similar problems, but instances did not go away.

any help would be appreciated.
