How to start an external server

Hello Emil and all,

I'd like to experiment external servers. Part of the reason is
for debugging a fcgi server. I have been using mod_fastcgi and letting
it start the servers. I just realized that I didn't know how to
start a fcgi server - I ran it, and it exited right away. I guess
there should be some parameters, (for example, the port to listen on)
I can set but I didn't see them in the main() function of the samples.

I'm curious about how a web server tells what port to use when it's
a dynamic server and I suppose I can manually start an external server
and specify the port. But like I said before, parameters are not even
processed in the main() function of the samples. So how are ports
specified? I read the spec but didn't find the answer. I then read
the source code. FCGI_LISTENSOCK_FILENO is the port to use but it is
defined as 0 in fastcgi.h. Doesn't it mean letting the OS to pick an
available port? If this is the case, how does the web server know
what port a fcgi server is using?

So, I think I'm totally confused. I wonder if you or someone else can
explain it a bit about how it work, or how you are starting your
external servers?
