Working installation with Apache 2.0?

Hello,
I have been running an Apache 2.0 webserver with PHP4 CGI support for
some time now and I'm currently testing out new ways to install all
these apps and make them faster. One of this is using FastCGI with PHP4
and PHP5, maybe also with a PHP cache in the end.

But right now I have a problem getting FastCGI to work in first
instance: I tried the Debian 3.1 package libfcgi0 and then the FastCGI
sources from 2003-11-11 (latest download archive), but both of them
cannot be included in Apache. I added this line in the Apache configuration:

LoadModule fastcgi_module /usr/local/lib/libfcgi.so

But Apache always says:

Syntax error on line 234 of /usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf:
Can't locate API module structure `fastcgi_module' in file
/usr/local/lib/libfcgi.so: /usr/local/apache2/lib/libapr-0.so.0:
undefined symbol: fastcgi_module

It seems that FastCGI is somehow incompatible with Apache 2.0. I have
found an old FAQ item, mentioning a similar problem with Apache 1.3:

But the apxs call written there doesn't work for me. This is the last
lines it printed out:

libtool: compile: libobj name `*.lo' may not contain shell special
characters.
gcc: *.c: No such file or directory
gcc: no input files
apxs:Error: Command failed with rc=65536
.

Any ideas how I can get that module working? I compiled Apache 2.0.55
from source, with suexec support.

To be honest, to me it looks a lot like FastCGI is dead for a long time
now. We have the last release of over two years ago, the FAQ is
incomplete, many sources on the web say it's hard to install and I have
seen recent posts in the archives asking about Apache 2.2 support and
the answer was something like "no". Is it worth the effort trying to get
FastCGI to work or will I possibly face a problem when Apache makes an
incompatible but required update and am I then forced to go back to the
conventional CGI solution (with suPHP, which is the only reasonable
secure multi-user setup still, besides FastCGI+suexec).
