I'm running Apache 2.0 with PHP 5.1.3 and the shell script way.

The only situation in that I got 500 errors so far was the first request
after an Apache restart or reload. I'm not sure if this is per-domain
(vHost), the machine is not yet working productive (but will be in a few
days) and I've only tested one or two vHosts. So I'll see how well it
does under load.
