Question on Apache 1.x, FastCGI, Php 4.4.2, Joomla

Joomla works fine, FastCGI seems to be working fine.  Had a customer (the
first to test out my FastCGI), report issues installing components.

Works fine without FastCGI, but with FastCGI, it just gives them an error
500 Page.

Thought it might be a tmp directory issue, but yet, he has session
variables in /tmp now, and they are actually owned properly now - so it
appears to be working in that regard.

Just not sure where to begin with this one. Joomla is operating fine, with
the exception of uploading files (upload, unzip automatically).

Thoughts?
