What is the most efficient way to check if a Database handler is still valid in perl FCGI application?

HI,
with Mod_perl, we can use apache::DBI,
what is the best way to check if a database handler is still valid from a
previous connect in Perl FCGI application?  attempting to execute a query
works, but is there any other more efficient methods ?
