Any RPM based distro suitable for compiling & using FastCGI

Does anyone have success compiling mod_fastcgi on an RPM based Linux
distributions using the Apache version that comes with that
distribution? I tried Red Hat 9, but ended up 1) removing Apache that
Red Hat installed and 2) compiling Apache myself before I could
successfully compile mod_fastcgi.
I'm trying the same thing with Suse 9.0 using the Apache2 that the
Suse installation process installs for you. The special.mk for example
is nowhere to be found.

Anyone? Please let me know!
