To be fair and accurate, Monotype said a *long* time ago that they were 
willing to release the MTX patents, but only if there was commitment to 
using the technology, i.e. they didn't want to give up their IP without 
assurance that there was a point to such a move. Google appears to have 
provided that assurance.
