Okay, I've completed the backport. You can grab a freemarker.jar built from 2.3.11 codebase and further enhanced with support for vararg method invocations from our continuous integration server at <http://freemarker.org:8085/download/FM-BRANCH23/artifacts/build-41/Library/freemarker.jar > I'd like to hear feedback whether everything works as expected.
