Sure, the "conditional code" is less verbose in XSLT because it's more forgiving regarding what really exists vs what it doesn't, this way you can "apply commands" and nothing will happen if there's nothing to apply to. Of course, this comes with the price that it is more difficult to uncover hidden errors/typos. Options, pros vs cons... such is life :).
