Er.. Not really. We actually are very MVC oriented.

Basically the application does the search via Struts actions, and search
results are rendered via Velocity or FreeMarker or JSP.
The application provides a UI for the customers to customize the search
results.
So the application control the model part. And customer control the view
part.
It's really separating the model and the view.

But not all things can be done vie FreeMarker. For example, some special
rendering, or date format, or re-organize the order of results.
These logic belongs to the view.

Now I guess I will have to create some utility objects that can load and
initialize a java object via reflection.
