A strong coffee later I have taken the first line of the stack trace at face value and a Google search has revealed that the common-beanutils.jar is missing. I have installed that and upgraded to the latest common-collections.jar and all is running fine - no need for any BeanWrapper activities. Many thanks for the pointer.
