Daniel, followed up on the suggestion of  validation.  I was assuming that
"some magic" happened inside the freemarker code to validate and inject
default attributes, clearly not, and that's OK once you understand.

I've worked through the process of building the validator and validating the
xml.  Now, I'm stuck on the issue that the "validated" xml that is the
result of the "validate" call not only doesn't it have defaulted attributes,
it is removing the ones that I specified.  No complaints....just silently
chops them out......

OK, this is NOT a freemarker issue but rather one that lives in the somewhat
Byzantine maze of java, xml and the legion of parser/processor/transformer
apis.

When I find a solution (and to date Google has NOT been my friend), I post
back here.
