Hi Alan,

I haven't played with this particular area but do check out the Xerces
feature setting:
http://xerces.apache.org/xerces2-j/features.html

These three seem to jump out as promising:
http://apache.org/xml/features/validation/schema
http://apache.org/xml/features/validation/schema-full-checking
http://apache.org/xml/features/validation/schema/normalized-value
