Extending List types in template data model objects

Hello, I would like to create a Java class that extends ArrayList by adding some public methods for access in a Freemarker template. However, Freemarker treats this as a SimpleSequence and allows access to the list members by index, but throws an error when the template invokes a method on the object. Is there any way to do this?
