Can you set the log level to trace for "freemarker.servlet", "freemarker.jsp" and "net.sourceforge.stripes.tag" and let it fail again? (I see the LayoutWriter in Stripes maintains a stack called `writers`, which possibly goes out of balance somewhere, causing LinkedList.pool() to return null, which in turns causing an NPE.)
