The problem above is that you haven't set the localEnum property, so
it's null. So when you write ${yInst.localEnum}, FreeMarker gets null,
so it assumes that the property wasn't set (see FAQ). If you add

  yInstance.setLocalEnum(X.FIRST);

then it will print

  The value of X in Y: FIRST
