I have changed the template to
<#list melati.database.getDisplayTables() as table>

which uses

  public List<Table> getDisplayTables() {
    return EnumUtils.list(displayTables());
  }

which has moved me on to the next problem!

(Melati, being ancient) does use a lot of Enumerations)
