The two items I listed go hand-in-hand; you can't remove the mouse-down delay without having gestures disabled by default. On the other hand, I think the way it works right now is broken. I constantly find myself mis-clicking, getting gestures and menus mixed up, etc. I'm still not convinced that having gestures turned on by default is a good idea. It seems far too easy for someone not expecting that behavior to really mess themselves up by gesturing by accident. I was initially in your camp -- my original patch added a UI pref to turn gesturing on and off. The patch was applied without the UI stuff, and I'm ok with that.
