There are some things in galeon already that depend on the control
center, mime types, mail handlers (or protocols in general) and
proxies¹.  These things will be gnome-wide regardless of galeon, and it
doesn't make any sense to rewrite them just for the heck of it.

Using the environment vars sounds like a good idea when you come from
the command line world so to speak.²  But there's a potential problem
for those who do use gnome as it would make galeon behave different from
every other gnome application.  In fact, using both the environment
variables _and_ gnome settings would make it behave different from every
command line application as well.  I'm not sure if there's anything to
gain from this now that galeon finally does use gnome-wide proxy
settings.


Now, I think we still need to provide an easy way to access the proxy
configuration in galeon.  For that I can think of two possibilities
right away.  First one is to provide a simple button in preferences that
simply starts the proxy settings capplet.  That should make it clear the
settings are not specific to galeon, but it might look somewhat strange.

Another option is to swallow the proxy capplet within the preferences
dialog.  (This is how evolution handles GtkHtml font settings.)  It
would be more integrated and provide the behavior one generally expects
from a preferences dialog.  But it doesn't clearly indicate the settings
are not just for galeon.

I'm not sure, but I'd propably prefer the latter.

As much as I hate to admit it, supporting the environment variables may
be worse than ignoring them.  Two separate, more or less global settings
for the same thing is just horrible.  I say one global is enough.



1. I'd like to add fonts to that gnome-wide list as well, but I'll leave
that to some other time...
2. I suggested this feature to be added in galeon a long time ago, why
couldn't you do it back then? ;)
