Nope.  It exists as an option I've made use of elsewhere. So since it
enabled me, as a user, to set my preference, I know that it is something
(at least one) user had a preference on.

Meaning tabs are fine.

In general I agree that "everything is a preference" is bad for
maintainability, explicability, etc. What are the criteria y'all
operate by for creating new preferences? (It seems to be a sensitive
issue round here...)
