Jeff, I fear this will be a rather inferior reply to the one I originally composed. Some programs are less reliable than one might think. First, I must apologise. I know I have been very snarky at times over this autocomplete fisaco, but wasn't actually being sarcastic in the paragraph you quoted or really anywhere else in that mail. I did really want to clarify that situation. On the 22nd I sent you an email asking about how the freeze would relate to specific things; the helper chooser, external download handlers, possibly ricardo's toolbar stuff. I was really hoping for a reply on that so as to establish the practicality of going forward with the gnome thing. Then of course, the whole autocompletion mess, and I went through that hoping that each mail that appeared from you would answer my questions; that not being the case, I figuratively sat on my hands (though I'm actualy kept plenty busy by work). I can well understand if the the fact I considered that an email that really needed a response got lost in all the noise. Ultimately, I think the whole situation indicates that it was never going to be practical with the current maintainership situation. I do not have the mandate to push forward on the gnome thing; number of posts and noise does not a leader make. Perhaps it is for the best; now we can sit down and try to gain some coordination and direction without being commited before the event. I do try my best to get along with people; I find being antagonistic and alienating to be a fruitless course of endeavour, almost always losing one more than it gains, yet one would observe that I seem to have been acting in a manner befitting such a goal. My natural inclination is towards apathy with regard to many things, so it is perhaps unsurprising that when I am motivated to care about something, I do so with considerable passion, and such is my position with regard to galeon. I am very much in the old unix tradition which is clearly incompatible with the current direction of the gnome project which seems to be pretty much the one galeon is headed at the moment. Perhaps I am the dinosaur who doesn't recognise that it's time to leave, but all the same I care about galeon and where it is going. If I cannot speak up for what I believe is the right thing to do, then I am simply a code monkey doing someone else's work for them. So I apologise for the way I go about these things; one's goals are ill served if one pursues them in a way that alienates. As of late, I have begun to wonder if galeon is actually a program or mearly a subject to be argued over. --phil ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Get the new Palm Tungsten T handheld.
