mozilla compiling woes (1.2.1 and cvs)

I have compiled both mozilla-1.2.1 (patched) and yesterday's source
tarball (unpatched) with the following configure options:

$ ./configure --prefix=/usr/local --enable-default-toolkit=gtk2
--disable-debug

Both built and installed without incident. However, I attempted to run
mozilla as root (the instructions stated to run as root before any user
to create some necessary files) I got basically the same terminal outupt
from both:

(process:1878): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **:
gtype.c:1876:g_type_register_static(): initialization assertion failed,
use g_type_init() prior to this function

(process:1878): Gdk-CRITICAL **: file gdkscreen-x11.c: line 136
(gdk_screen_get_width): assertion `GDK_IS_SCREEN (screen)' failed

(process:1878): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **:
gtype.c:1876:g_type_register_static(): initialization assertion failed,
use g_type_init() prior to this function

(process:1878): Gdk-CRITICAL **: file gdkscreen-x11.c: line 154
(gdk_screen_get_height): assertion `GDK_IS_SCREEN (screen)' failed

(process:1878): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **:
gtype.c:1876:g_type_register_static(): initialization assertion failed,
use g_type_init() prior to this function

(process:1878): Gdk-CRITICAL **: file gdkrgb.c: line 3537
(gdk_screen_get_rgb_visual): assertion `GDK_IS_SCREEN (screen)' failed

If I run it as a user no output is generated.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem is?

I am running RedHat 7.3 with the latest ximian-gnome2 snaps, along with
an updated via rpm mozilla 1.2.1 and galeon 1.2.7 installed in the usual
place, /usr

thanks.
