mailto: links not working/GCC 2.95.3 vs. GCC 3.2 issue (fwd)

I already posted this to -users, but maybe people here can tell be better
how the mailto: handling works in Galeon and why it's not working in the
Galeon/Mozilla/GCC 2 vs. GNOME/GCC 3 setup.  Yes, I tried even a simple
"touch /tmp/mailtolink" in the Galeon email-program setting, but I suspect
that it's just not reading that part of the configuration.
Gentoo users and users of SuSE 8.1 should have this problem also, either
no Java or no mailto: links.

My setup:
GNOME 1.4 built with GCC 3.2, Mozilla 1.2 and Galeon 1.2.6 built with
GCC 2.95.3 to get the Java-plugin to work.
With this setup, clicking on "mailto:" links in Galeon does not work.

With Mozilla and Galeon compiled with GCC 3.2 that does work, but Java
does not, for the known problems with the plugin.
I suspect some problem with gconf being compiled with GCC 3.2 and thus not
communication correctly with the GCC 2.95.3 galeon?

Has anybody managed to get a setup running with working Java and working
"mailto:" links?  Maybe some time in my lifetime there will be a GCC 3.x
compiled Java-plugin but until then I need to get things working this way.
And no, recompiling the whole GNOME desktop with 2.95.3 is not really an
option.

Is there any way for me to inspect what is happening when clicking on a
mailto: link?  With the GCC 2.95.3 Galeon it's just not doing anything.  I
did a strace on the processes, but don't get too much out of it.  The 3.2
one has a part like:
