A plea for working thumb buttons on my IntelliMouse

I'm a relatively new Galeon user and I really like it.  I have only one
issue: I have a Microsoft IntelliMouse, which has two extra "thumb"
buttons on each side (though realistically only one could be operated
with the thumb).  In Internet Explorer, these buttons function as page
backward (left button, operated with the thumb) and page forward (right
button).  Once you get used to this behavior, it's really hard to go
without it.

I've got the mouse properly configured under X on Linux, where the thumb
buttons are buttons 6 and 7, respectively.  Is there any way to map
button presses to actions (like page forward and back) in Galeon?

Some may suggest imwheel for this.  I've tried it (extensively) but
haven't gotten it to work reliably.  (There's some unfortunate
interaction with the window manager or other X or Gnome2 component on
RedHat 8).  I also tried gestures, which are cool, but not a replacement
for the back button (IMHO).

I would be grateful for any information on getting this working.  Or, if
Galeon can't do this today, some developer could make my day by adding
this feature.  I know there must fellow frustrated IntelliMouse users!
