It's actually as far as I understand a Gnome2/GTK2 thing.  Apparently,
if you have set up a menu shortcut as Ctrl-U, the menu takes precedence
above the text-field (I think this sucks, if you can override TAB for
text-fields you should override Ctrl-U as well).  If you don't have
Ctrl-U set up to anything, it should work as expected (assuming you have
set up Gnome 2 to use Emacs keys for your keyboard shortcuts).

I normally just run the gnome-panel and galeon, and this doesn't work then.
If I start the keyboard shortcuts program it seems that the 
gnome-settings-daemon is started, and then Ctrl-U works.  Ctrl-E is still
bound to starting my e-mailclient, which I really really hate by now.
Ctrl-A of course, selects all (i.e. everything in the webpage).

Making sure that all translators of all gnome programs remember to not
bind any emacs keys to a menu item seems really naiive to me...
