It might be worth looking into other less "clean" xml variations that directly incorporate more use of xhtml or xlink, or it may be better to just clean the output as html or xhtml directly. After talking with ricardo and others on IRC, and getting tired of the load time myself, i'm pretty sure my first-attempt XML is clearly NOT the way to go.
