I'm afraid that galeon 1.3.x *is* the workaround for 1.2.x not working
with gtk2 :-)

There are substantial differences in API between glib/gtk+ 1.2.x and 2.x
and even bigger differences in the GNOME components, so when you have
something like galeon which leverages a lot of components, you're almost
forced to make a complete rewrite. You'll notice that projects like
xchat and pan simply stopped leveraging GNOME completely rather than try
and fight with the new API (though I hope they'll both build back up to
it in due course).

So, they don't really have much choice. If you're going to ship a gtk2
build of mozilla and you want galeon, it needs to be 1.3.x

Do you have specific issues with 1.3.x? Maybe they're already on our
radar, and if not, it's good to know about them.
