It is on my extra long term TODO list, I might even manage to have a look at it still during this decade :) Anyway, it seems there are two possible ways to do this. First is to use bonobo monikers or whatnot to a bonobo component for unknown mime types. This is basically how a generic shell would work. The other way suggested by philipl is to extend plugger to handle bonobo components and work on that. The argument here is that mozilla already has fully functional plugin system, and we should work on that. This is all just theoretical. No one has tried to do anything yet, not even reach a conclusion if one is clearly better than the other.
