I find the Internet Explorer approach rather interesting too: the
contextual menu for the missing images offers a "load image" (or
something like that) which will retrieve the image and render it in
place. This is unlike Mozilla's (for example) similar contextual menu
entry, which loads the image by replacing the current page altogether,
which I could never find of much use.
