Thanks for that tip: I discovered that the glib2 and glib2-devel
RPMs that were present on my system were not complete.
I installed more recent versions from Ximian Desktop 2 and then
things went well, including make.

Shouldn't scripts like autogen.sh and gnome-autogen.sh use the
-e switch to /bin/sh to have the execution stop when one of
the commands fails?  (Is that switch portable?)

Another confusing aspect was the "Ignore non-fatal messages" line.
I started thinking that the absence of /usr/share/glib-2.0/gettext
may not be fatal, so I looked elsewhere...
