Because there are two diferent copy/paste methods here that don't always functionally overlap. I want to be able to copy it into the same copy buffer as if I did ctrl-c (that actually works). Imagine this: I want to copy some link text and then paste it on top of some other text. I do as you suggested and select the link text. Then I go to the text I want to copy over and select that and ... oops, doesn't work. This is just a question of consistency.
