*ahem* yeah, I should really read emails more carefully :-) This has
annoyed me in the past as well, and is definitely a bug.

I see, that is a good reason why it shouldn't jump to the new tab.
Please bugzilla it, and I'll take a look.

There is some discussion about this (for mozilla) at

There are buttons with history, just go to Edit/Toolbar, and drag the
other Back/Forward button to the toolbar. The toolbar editor is a bit
confusing as there are 2 back / forward / up buttons, one with the drop
down menu, one without. You can also get to the history on either type
of button using the right mouse button.
