I'm not sure exactly where the fault lies, but what you describe does
happen when you have autostart turned on.

From about:config, you can turn accessibility.typeaheadfind.autostart
off to stop this behaviour. Then use '/' to start a search. Now when
you type normally, it won't trigger typeaheadfind.
