It is the same philosophy. A centralized place where you can change
everything opposed to a per app configuration place.

Also, the gconf-editor, like the windows registry is designed to be a
place where you hide configuration option from the user.

It would not have been so bad if there was a way to access the
gconf option for a given app, while hiding the other stuff, not
necessarily showing the long path to the options and maybe having access
to this from the app itself. Ideally there would be a nice UI on top of
it, but that is maybe asking too much.

Well, yes, i have edited the plain windows registry by hand, and agree
that gconf is much better, but it is based upon the same fundamental
design, and the fact that it has english descriptions, sorry but it is
not a fundamental difference.

And you cannot negate that at least gnome developpers have been looking at
the windows registry for inspiration, be it in the good or in the bad. I
well remember the flamewars on the gnome lists a few years ago on this
topic.
