Since you are talking about detaching tabs in gedit later in your mail,
I just wanted to mention that I never noticed it was possible to detach
tabs and have several windows opened in gedit before someone told me
about it... I think I would have noticed it was possible if there had
been at least a Open new window menu entry :)

I quickly looked at gedit code, and iirc it mostly does the same thing
as my widget currently does. The only problem with the gedit approach is
that it is not embedded in a widget, and that there is no tab drag n
drop. I don't have much work left (ie a few hours) to finish both tab
drag n drop between windows and tab detaching, but I'll have to find
this time (currently my xwindow is borked, and I need to reinstall
win2000, so I can't promise anything before next week end...)
