Mime type handling in GNOME was really old and pretty crappy, it needed
to be rewritten. So it was rewritten fro gnome 2.8, but noone stepped up
to rewrite the old mime editor...

The thread titled "Proposal for a MIME mapping spec" on the
[email protected] mailing list started on 07 July 2004 might be
helpful...
