I started out in the Linux world as a gnome sympathizer, but then
backed away from the desktop, and now am wondering if gnome
applications are really within the reach of a non-guru who sees the
operating system as a means rather than end.

I thank you for your helpful guidance, particularly the pointer to the
mime-type database. It was more helpful than my # file command, which
told me my sample .wmv file was: Microsoft ASF. The MIME database
suggests that x-ms-asf is a mime type, but galeon can bring up gxine
to run the file, even though only the x-ms-mpeg is in the mimecache.

But things are working smoothly now, thanks.
