GNOME is obviously not flawless, but then again, neither is Windows. In
this particular case, the problem is that GXine doesn't give you a
proper .desktop entry. But is that such a surprise, considering GXine is
not a GNOME program?

As of GNOME 2.10, Totem is the GNOME media player. It wouldn't have this
problem.

Furthermore, the REAL problem here is that there isn't a good video
player plugin. You might want to google for mplayerplug-in. Or, even
better, follow http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=144937 and be
the first on your block to use the Totem Mozilla plugin, which will
solve the issue permanently.
