Side Panel management

I've been hunting around but I can't figure out how the contents of the side panel are managed. I've discovered a javascript bookmarklet that will add the currently loaded URL to the side panel, but I can't figure out how to *remove* things from the side panel (other than editing sidebars.xml, which I would rather not do if there is another interface). Anyone know how to remove panels?
