Well, LPRng is certainly *capable* of this; that's what apsfilter is
for. The problem is likely either that the default printer in
/etc/printcap is the raw printer to which apsfilter is directing its
output, or that apsfilter isn't tied into printcap at all.

At any rate, this is the wrong list: ask on a list related to your
print spooler (whichever it is). Galeon is doing nothing wrong here.

The last time I tried CUPS it seemed to be terribly focused on, well,
printers. I schedule all sorts of non-printery things with my copy of
LPRng. (Why is everyone looking at me so strangely? It's perfectly
normal, I say!)
