Intermittant performance problem in galeon

I have used galeon for years, and I really prefer it over Mozilla and  
Firefox.  One of the big reasons is its speed - both in start-up time  
and in general in saving objects to disk.  I collect astronomy images  
and the 'save' time for a group of large (2k x 3k pixels and larger) is  
really noticable.

However at some time - I can't really say when - I started seeing a  
problem.    It started (I *think*) sometime after going from fedora FC2  
to FC3.

Currently I am running Fedora FC3 and using KDE as my desktop.  Other  
particulars:
     o/s:	fedora fc3
     galeon	currently 1.3.21-1.fc3 (compiled using the
		1.3.21-1.fc4souces).  the same problem has occurred
		with all the versions I've tried  > 1.3.15.
     mozilla:	1.7.8-1.3.1 (has occurred all the versions I'v tried
		since at least 1.7.3)
     cache:	48Mb
     kernel	2.6.11-1.35_FC3 (happens under all the 2.6.11
		kernels I've used)
     glibc	2.3.5-0.fc3.1
     memory	1GB
     cpu		athlon xp2400+ (but the same thing happens on  
my box at
		the office which has a P4 and 512MB ram)

What happens: I will be using galeon and suddenly for no reason I can  
determine the the cpu usage (top) of kdeinit and the X server will jump  
to approximately 99.8% or more.  Until then everything is essentially  
"normal"; however after this occurs the cpu usage of those two  
processes stays at 95+ or higher until I exit (or kill) the galeon  
process, at which time the cpu usage of those two drop back to  
'normal'.  I never get any error messages and nothing looks odd in  
/var/log/messages, BTW, and when I compile it there are no error  
messages (which is reasonable, because on an error msg, I'd expect the  
compile to bomb out).

I have done web searches on this one (and RTFM'ed) but have not seen  
anything about this problem, so any suggestions would be greatly  
appreciated.
